Bathing Complex below the Ground

Venakatappa Bavi(well)

Kanakagiri, 50 kilometers north of UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi, is home to the Vijayanagara period Royal Bathing Complex erected by Venkatappa Naik. The entire structure is underground, with one magnificent entrance, three narrow subterranean entrances, and two entrances to a gallery. It's a new world once you've descended, with a massive tiered pool encircled by a broad veranda, an open sky central spot, and a temple. Themes, floral art, serpents, and various Hindu deities are etched onto stone pillars and walls. If you're driving to Hampi, this is a must-see.

Art prints are available.
